What shotgun works best for home defense?

I’ve been eyeing shotguns for home defense and could use some input from those who’ve been there. I'm stuck between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. I get that the 12-gauge packs a punch, but I’ve heard the 20-gauge is easier to manage, especially in tight spaces. What's your take?

What should I focus on when it comes to barrel length and stock setup for a home defense shotgun? I'm looking for something straightforward and reliable — any specific models or brands you trust?

And what about training? I've shot a shotgun before, but it was just casual. How should I be prepping if I want to feel confident when it counts?

Hard to beat an 870 12 gauge with 18” barrel.
If price is a concern, look for a Mossberg Maverick 88, can be found around $200 and up.

I have 2 in my bedroom at all times. A Mossberg 500 12gauge and a Tokarev TAR12 12 gauge. Both are relatively inexpensive but uktra reliable. Since we are empty nesting, both are koaded with 3" #4 buckshot.
YMMV

Depends on your frame size and weight. Also who you have living around you like are you in an apartment complex or a single home. I say that because you have to worried about over penetration of large caliber buckshot or slugs. A Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 in 20 ga would be my first choice. 2 3/4 inch #3 buck will be a good choice. Or 3 inch in #2 buck. Make sure it has a good recoil pad. Practice with it too on man sized paper targets so you can see what the pattern looks like. Good luck.

Only thing that worries me is recoil in a tight space, it could throw you off if you're not used to it, are you planning on getting regular range time in before making a call?

I went with a Mossberg 500 in 12-gauge for home defense. Short barrel, plain stock...nothing fancy. At first the recoil was rough, but after regular practice it feels natural and I'm confident handling it now

Give this combination a look:

I went with the Tokarev TBP 12-gauge Bullpup, after brake-in it would shoot everything. Note: give the firearm a good oiling before shooting the first time because they seem to come dry from the manufacturer.
