Are ticks really that bad, or are we overreacting?

I've been hearing so much about ticks and how they carry diseases like Lyme. But are they really that big of a threat, or are we just paranoid? Would love to hear thoughts from others who hike frequently or spend time outdoors.

this year, ticks seem to be on a down cycle. I don't worry too much about them.
