I'm looking for some advice. I've been struggling with astigmatism for years and I'm really tired of squinting when I use iron sights. I'm thinking about making the switch to an optic but I keep hearing that most red dots might not work well for me. Has anyone else faced this issue? What did you choose that actually made a difference?

Prism optics are often the top choice since they have an etched reticle rather than a projected dot which means your astigmatism won’t affect with your view at all. Both Primary Arms and Vortex offer some solid prism sights in the 1x to 3x range that have gained quite a following. The Primary Arms SLx series is mostly recommended for this very reason.

I’ve had issues with dots and astigmatism. There’s no “fix all”.
I’ve found that finer dots are easier for me.
For rifles, I’ve had good luck with Aimpoint, Holosun and Vortex.
For handguns I tried the RMR 3.25 moa, flares/sunburst real bad. Tried a Holosun 508T, no problems at all.
Other’s have recommended green dots. Not for me though, my rifles are red and I wanted to stay consistent.

Just go to Academy, Bass Pro, whatever’s close and ask to check them out. See what works for you.

Turning the intensity down to a minimum usable setting on the low end dots helps to keep the flaring down for me. I did not realise about the etched sights being so much better, but now that you mention it my lone Trijicon does exhibit no flare at all..

I have an astigmatism in my dominant eye and use Holosun optics on my carry guns without issue. I run bigger dots and that seems to help as well. All my carry guns have a 6moa dot.
Comp gun has a FTP Alpha 3 on it and no issues with it either. This optic is a 8moa dot.

I tried RMRs and they didn't work well for me.
