Road Trip with a Gun

Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I'd like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that tricky. Avoiding NY adds a ridiculous amount of drive time, so I'm weighing my options. I've thought about checking the laws around passing through different states, but that can be overwhelming with all the regulations. I'm just curious if anyone else has run into this kind of situation and what you decided to do. Any tips would be appreciated.

I usually carry a 1911 or revolver when traveling out of state.
Keep an eye on ammo laws too. Since you're going through NY, a j frame with 158 gr semi wadcutters may be a great option.
