Instead of getting caught up in brand debates, let’s focus on what really makes a 9mm platform perform better at 100 yards. For those who have fine-tuned their setups for precision, which barrel specifications, trigger enhancements, and ammunition choices have yielded the best results? If you’ve been tracking your groupings before and after making changes, feel free to share them so we can compare actual outcomes.

I switched from a standard 16" carbine barrel to an 8.5" barrel on my PCC and the longer barrel was giving me tighter groups. I think it’s probably because the extra velocity helps stabilize the round. Barrel quality is important too. A good match-grade barrel with a tighter chamber and better rifling will always outshoot a standard mil-spec barrel. I've also heard that a 1:10 twist rate works well for heavier 147gr bullets at longer distances but I'm still using the standard 1:10 myself.

If you're aiming for precision, trigger work is impotant. I replaced the stock trigger on my AR9 with a Geissele SSA-E and it made a huge difference in my ability to take clean shots without messing up my sight picture. When it comes to ammo, I've had the best luck with 147gr match loads. Before I fine-tuned everything, I was getting around 4-5" groups at 100 yards, but after upgrading the barrel and trigger and finding the right ammo, I'm consistently hitting the 2-3" range now.

Trying to stretch a 9mm out that far really humbled me quickly. Sure, little tweaks helped here and there but consistency ended up mattering way more than just swapping out parts, it is so easy to get caught up chasing upgrades instead of really focusing on your own skill.

I spent one summer chasing tighter groups at 100 yards and the biggest surprise wasn’t the trigger upgrade, it was finally finding a load my pistol genuinely liked.

A good trigger helps but finding a load your pistol likes and sticking with it is usually where the tightest 100-yard groups come from.
