Why I started focusing more on skills than gear

It is easy to keep buying new equipment and feel like you are becoming more prepared but that only goes so far. After a few real world situations, I realized that skills matter more than anything you can carry. Knowing how to use what you have and being able to adapt when something fails makes a bigger difference than adding more gear to your kit.

People will sell whatever they can to whoever they can get to buy it. "Gear" may give you the capability, but not the ability to harvest that animal. It's like the guys that buy the "Long Range" scopes and think automatically they CAN shoot and harvest an animal at 1000 yards. Like Alan said "skills are insurance" and that's a fact. I know my rifle and it's capabilities and I'm comfortable with both.

I spent years just buying all sorts of gear, loading up my bag, until I realized one day I couldn't even run a mile with the damn thing. TSo having good skills is a lot lighter to carry than another pouch.
