Survival skill everyone should know

I was chatting with a buddy the other day, and it hit me how many folks overlook the basics when it comes to survival. Everyone talks about fire-starting and shooting, but stuff like water purification or simple navigation gets slept on. Personally, I think land navigation with just a map and compass is huge. What do y'all think is the most overlooked survival skill?

I would put "basic first aid" way up there. I grew up hunting and fishing, and we were always miles from town. My dad kept a kit in the truck and showed me how to clean and wrap wounds, deal with sprains, that kind of thing. Fire and shelter are big, sure, but if you cannot handle a bad cut or infection, you are in trouble quick.

I hear you, fire and shelter won't matter if you can't treat a cut or sprain. How do you usually keep your kit stocked and ready?
